Frequently asked questions

The questions customers ask us most about container and vehicle shipping to Mongolia

How are vehicles shipped from Japan to Mongolia?

There are two main methods. RoRo shipping — the vehicle is driven aboard a dedicated vessel, with no container needed. FCL container — the vehicle is loaded into a container, which also allows parts and other goods to travel with it.

We advise which fits based on the number and type of vehicles and the route. After the ocean leg, cargo continues into Mongolia by rail or by road, depending on current congestion and how urgent the delivery is.

How long does shipping take?

Transit time depends on the route, vessel schedule, port congestion, border conditions and rail wagon availability. Rather than quoting a generic number, we include the actual schedule for your specific shipment in the quotation.

During transit we provide regular updates on container location and status, and tell you immediately if the schedule changes.

What information do you need to prepare a quote?

Four things are enough:

Where the cargo is coming from — country, port or city
What is being shipped — vehicles, machinery or goods, and quantity
Roughly when
A contact phone number

Send these through the website form or to info@erchimtrans.com and we respond within 24 hours.

What are FCL, RoRo and LCL?

FCL (Full Container Load) — an entire container dedicated to one shipper. Your cargo is not mixed with anyone else's.

RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) — vehicles and self-propelled machinery are driven aboard the vessel, with no container required. The most common method for importing vehicles.

LCL (Less than Container Load) — cargo from several shippers shares one container.

How is cargo moved from Erenhot and Zamiin-Uud to Ulaanbaatar?

We collect the container at the border crossing and truck it to Ulaanbaatar. When rail is congested and wagons must be waited for, road transport saves time.

We handle terminal coordination, container release and the associated transport documentation.

Which services does Erchim Trans not provide?

For the sake of clarity, we do not currently offer:

LCL — shared container shipping
Break bulk — crane-loaded loose cargo

If your cargo falls into these categories, tell us early — where we can, we will advise and point you in the right direction.

How do I track where my cargo is?

We provide regular updates on container location and status throughout transit, including key milestones such as border crossing, rail loading and arrival in Ulaanbaatar.
